Diagram of how MPLS IP VPN works

How MPLS IP VPN Works

The primary connectivity of Epsilon’s IP VPN service are Ethernet circuits from the customer site or data centre to Epsilon’s MPLS fabric. This can be either Epsilon’s Data Centre Interconnect, or a partner’s Layer 2 (L2) Ethernet service or Layer 3 (L3) service.

In addition to L2 Ethernet access, Epsilon can also connect sites over an Internet service, which can be from Epsilon or by the Enterprise. SLAs will only be provided for Internet services by Epsilon.

The following bandwidths are available:

  • From 2M to 10M: in increments of 2M
  • From 10M to 100M: in increments of 10M
  • From 100M to 1Gb: in increments of 100M
  • From 1G to 10G: in increments of 1G

ACCESS RESILIENCE OPTIONS

Building a End-to-end Network of Your Choice

Last mile access may be configured with primary and secondary links from customer sites, in the form of private Ethernet circuits. The following last mile access configurations are offered:

Full Access Circuit & CPE Diversity

The primary and secondary links are fully diverse from each other and can be provided by a single access provider with diverse fibre access or by different providers.

If both the links are provided by a single service provider, Epsilon will ensure that they are using diverse routes, i.e., two fibre routes connecting to two different PE routers.

Full Access Circuit Diversity, Single CPE

The primary and secondary links will be a protected Ethernet circuit from a single service provider and connects to different PE routers. The paths are not diverse from each other.

Single Access, Single CPE

The last mile service will be an unprotected service. Access can be via Ethernet, Internet access based on Ethernet, Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) or Fibre to the Premise (FTTP).

Secure Fixed Internet Access

The last mile service will be an unprotected service. Access can be via Ethernet, Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) or Fibre to the Premise (FTTP).

Access is secured by an IPsec encrypted tunnel from the CPE router terminating on a security gateway in Epsilon’s Point of Presence.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is IP VPN service?

Epsilon’s Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (IP VPN) uses multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) technology to provide multi-site businesses with the security expected of a private network. It holds significant benefits of a shared network in terms of cost and optimal connectivity.

2. How does IP VPN work?

Epsilon’s IP VPN service is a Layer 3 any-to-any private Wide Area Network (WAN) service that is bundled with managed Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) for end-to-end managed connectivity that is efficient and secure.

This solution is suitable for a variety of site types ranging from data centres to regional offices and branches. Last mile access can be delivered via a private Ethernet service or Internet via IPSec tunnels depending on your business requirements.

3. Is Quality of Service (QoS) available for Internet-based Access?

There is no guaranteed Quality of Service when utilising the Internet as an access method. However, Epsilon’s access solution secures all Internet connectivity with IPsec from the CPE to a gateway to MPLS.

4. Can I access Cloud services using IP VPN?

Epsilon’s IP VPN includes cloud routing to Virtual Private Clouds on Microsoft Azure, AWS, Google and more. The virtual instance in the cloud then becomes an end point in the network where any user can connect to it.

5. What’s the difference between IP VPN and MPLS?

IP VPN provides greater flexibility and control of one’s network, compared to MPLS. In addition to relying on MPLS infrastructure to provide a secure, private network, IP VPN can also operate on the public Internet to connect sites.
